Over a half mile of cast iron fence was restored including 900′ (25 tons) of all new cast iron sections. Twenty years has gone by since this work was completed and the new cast iron sections are in excellent condition. The design of the original fence was not well intended for frost and changing seasons and needs constant repair.
Proper restoration of the historic fence would have involved new bases installed below the frost line and post to fence connections that would slide with slotted holes and bolts instead of welding. Unfortunately funds were not available at the time.
